Step on Borobudur

Chandi Borobudur is one of a world cultural heritage site or World Heritage Site, a Buddhist temple located in Borobudur, belongs to Magelang regency and located in Central Java province. To reach the monument is approximately 96 kilometers from Semarang, the capital city of Central Java, and approximately 86 kilometers from the city of Surakarta, and about 40 kilometers from the city of Yogyakarta.

Chandi Borobudur is located right above the hill and built in the middle of several mountains and hills. Looking to the west, there are Mount Sundoro and Sumbing. Looking to the east you can see Mount Merbabu and an active volcano, Merapi. View to the north, it is approximately 15 kilometers from Borobudur, there is Tidar hill, and to the south it is bounded by the Menoreh hill range. Borobudur is located at the confluence of two rivers, they are Progo and Elo, located right in the middle between the east of Chandi Borobudur and Chandi Pawon.

Chandi Borobudur is listed under Cultural criteria:

(i) "to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius",

(ii) "to exhibit an important interchange of human values, over a span of time or within a cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town-planning or landscape design", and

(vi) "to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literary works of outstanding universal significance".

Borobudur at glance is about sending you to the Borobudur's history, when the temple was built in the 9th century during the power of Syailendra Dynasty, in the Mataram Kingdom. Borobudur Temple is an extraordinary architecture, with quite a lot of original elements blended together to make Borobudur very unique. The temple had the designs of traditional Javanese ancestors and the Buddhist architecture, the concept of attaining Nirvana.

It is also a sacred Buddhist building, a place to worship and the Buddhist pilgrimage. The pilgrims start from the base of the monument and the pilgrim take a path around and step to the top through symbolic of the Buddhist. The journey for pilgrims begins at the base and follows a path by walking around the terraces and ascends to the top through three levels of Buddhist cosmologi. The three levels of symbolic Kamadhatu means the world of desire, Rupadhatu means the world of forms, and Arupadhatu the world of formlessness.

The pilgrims are guided to the monument through several stairways and corridors with the narrative and decorative relief panels, carved on the wall and the balustrades. The relief of Buddha as well as the Buddhist was carved on the main wall. Borobudur is the biggest Buddhist building in the world.
